  There are almost always multiple elements/objects in any artwork or digital image. In a number of these cases, there are some primary subjects of the artwork that we want to emphasise. This article talks about the most used techniques and concepts to lay emphasis on the right part/object of the image to focus on the primary subject. When we talk about emphasis in photography, we talk about contrast and we talk about positioning of the primary object. Contrast - When something is visibly different from its surroundings in size or colour or shape, human mind tends to focus on the odd element automatically. This concept is used very widely in art especially photography. Positioning - Different grids specially and scientifically designed to figure out the focus areas of an image to place a primary subject at so as to bring out the best in the image and keep the required focus on the viewer at the required section.   Continuing with design elements and concepts, we were taught about pattern, rhythm and tessellation. Pattern means repetition of objects or combination of objects in a recurring or regular arrangement. Rhythm means repetition of objects but with some gaps and variations. it gives a sense of harmony among the objects. Tessellation is a special kind of pattern where there are multiple objects combined to form a single tile and then the tile is repeated to form the pattern. Importantly, tessellation has no gaps or overlaps between the tiles. Also, the combination of objects, often, tries to show harmony or juxtaposition to send out a message.   As part of design elements and concepts, one of the key things that we learnt was ' Balance '. It is very important to have balance in everything we create - be it an image, digital art, fashion art etc. Before I learnt about balance as a design concept, I always thought balance meant symmetry. Now I know better that there are two types of balance we talk about - symmetrical and asymmetrical.  What I used to think of as Balance is actually "Symmetrical Balance". The image above is in no ways showing symmetry but it looks balanced and I don't necessarily mean the actual balance shown in the image. Let me showcase this by one of the examples I created myself.   This post is about a upcycling garment project that we were assigned as part of our social responsibility module. We had to change the outfit of a garment by using three Rs which are Reuse, Reduce, Recycle . This seemed like an interesting project where I had freedom to explore my fashion sense and everything I had learnt till now. I started off with some garments which I was not using anymore for a long time for different reasons. I tried to play around with some of them, tried to create beach top out of a long T-Shirt which turned out to be decent but more importantly understood what goes behind upcycling garments, the challenges behind it to make the garment usable and not just visually appealing. I tried to make a triangle bottom with some contrasting ribbons on the alter neck. This is a beach top which signifies comfort and free flowing nature.
